The ANSeR study is testing a computer algorithm that can detect seizures in newborn babies.

What is ANSeR?

Babies that are admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit, as a result of complications in pregnancy, need to be cared for in a way that prevents long term illness. The ANSeR studies is focused on diagnosing when babies are suffering from brain injuries or stress and creating algorithms that can detect seizures.

How does ANSeR work?

EEGs are usually read by a specialist, and this expertise is not always available. ANSeR is aimed at providing equipment and programming which monitors babies and alerts doctors in the event of problems. The goal of the study is give babies an expert opinion whenever they need it.

Seizures in newborns are very difficult for medical teams to detect. 

EEG measures the tiny electrical impulses from the brain using small sensors applied to the scalp. To interpret the signals, EEG experts are needed, but they are in short supply and not always available

ANSeR is an algorithm that can detect seizures and alert the healthcare team that they baby may need help. This enables them to treat seizures promptly and thereby improve the long-term outcomes for children who have had a difficult start in life

The aim of ANSeR is to deliver a cotside tool that will help medical staff interpret EEG - it will be an EEG expert, available 24/7.
