Professor Dempsey is the inaugural Horgan Chair in Neonatology at University College Cork, a Consultant Neonatologist at Cork University Maternity Hospital and is Neonatal Lead at the INFANT Research Centre. He is a UCC graduate, he completed postgraduate training in Paediatrics in Ireland and subsequently a Neonatal Fellowship at McGill University Health Centre, Montreal.
He has been actively involved in a significant number of multisite international randomised controlled trials conducted in newborns over the last 15 years. These include trials of cerebral near infrared spectroscopy, umbilical cord management, drug therapy trials including dopamine for low blood pressure, biviracetum for neonatal seizures, paracetamol for patent ductus arteriosus and a medical device trial addressing seizure detection. He sits on a number of trial steering committees, and a number of data monitoring committees for multicentre newborn trials.
Prof Dempsey is a member of a number of international organisations including the European Society of Paediatric Research, European Neonatal Echo Working group, European NIRS Working group and Pharmacology subsection of the ESPR. Prof Dempsey is a previous board member of the Faculty of Paediatrics and past president of the Irish American Pediatric Society.
He was appointed a member of the National Research Ethics Committee (A) for Clinical Trials in 2021 and is currently deputy chair. He is co Chair of the Cork Regional Ethics Committee. He has acted as an international reviewer for a number of international funding agencies including the NIHR, Wellcome Trust and the European Commission. He has several Higher Degrees, including an MSc in Health Care Ethics and Law and an MA in Teaching and Learning. He has > 300 publications on a variety of aspects of newborn care.
